Former pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao believes he’s heading into a make-or-break fight with hard-hitting challenger Brandon Rios after suffering two straight setbacks at the hands of Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez last year.

The 34-year-old Pacquiao is scheduled to return to the ring against Rios on November 23 at the CotaiArena at the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel in Macau, China. This marks the first time the Filipino boxing icon fights outside the United States after seven years.

SAN FRANCISCO–Filipino boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao will return to the ring in November against either Mike Alvarado or Brandon Rios in a big boxing event being planned in the Chinese resort city of Macau.

Pacquiao, 34, wanted an immediate rematch in September with his arch-rival Juan Manuel Marquez, but negotiations apparently bogged down on the question of purse-sharing.

Manny Pacquiao said that he’d be back in the ring sooner than later. But while most thought it would be against Juan Manuel Marquez, it appears that another suitor will step up to face the Filipino. Although most were anticipating a third fight between Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado after their two previous epic encounters, that doesn’t seem to be happening either.

What appears to be in the works is a showdown between Pacquiao and Alvarado this October in China. According to Denver sportscaster Vic Lombardi‘s twitter, both sides have verbally agreed to the fight but money still needs to be discussed. If true, this will be an interesting fight for both boxers.

Arum says Manny Pacquiao’s next fight will be in Macau, China in October rather than September. Arum isn’t saying who Pacquiao’s opponent will be but it’s one of the following fighters: Juan Manuel Marquez, Tim Bradley, Brandon Rios or Mike Alvarado.

In other words, it’ll be one of Bob Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters that Manny Pacquiao will be fighting. That’s no surprise because that’s who Bob Arum has mostly been matching Manny Pacquiao up against lately.

Promoter Bob Arum said he is trying to put together a fifth fight between Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez and shopping it to casinos in Asia. He said Saturday night at the Brandon Rios-Mike Alvarado fight that the bout would likely be at one of the Venetian hotel-casinos in Macau or Singapore.

“The thing we’re waiting on is which one of their hotels they want to do it at,” Arum said.

Once you get past all the smoke and mirrors, it becomes pretty clear that Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez expect to fight one another later this year. Timothy Bradley, Brandon Rios and a handful of other names have been mentioned as possible opponents for them, however, that’s all just for show. The only bout out there for Pacquiao and Marquez that would result in a payoff that justifies the risk involved is one featuring them fighting each other.

Over the past three months or so, Pacquiao has remained fairly consistent when it comes to fighting Marquez. He was willing to do it on the eve of his last loss, and he continues to be willing to fight him now. Of course, it’s easy for him to be down – he made $17 million more than counterpart in defeat on the last go-round. Clearly he doesn’t need a whole lot of bargaining power. Marquez, meanwhile, only collected $6 million for one of the bigger victories in his career. Hence him taking such a hard stand as of late and pretending as though he would legitimately fight someone other than Pacquiao if his requests aren’t met.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has probably heard the news that 39-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KO’s) is saying that he has no interested in facing Arum’s stable fighter Manny Pacquiao for a fifth fight in September or ever.

Marquez feels that his recent 6th round knockout victory over the Filipino closes the book on their four fight series, and there’s no point in Arum trying to set up yet another fight.
